Travel tips

Here’s just a few of the questions we are frequently asked about travel to the island.

How do I get to Simeulue?

First you will need to get to Medan, Sumatra. From there you will catch a small plane to Simeulue. There are two options:

  • Wings Air departs Medan on Tuesdays and Saturdays
  • Susi Air departs Medan on Mondays and Thursdays.

The flight time is approximately one hour. Flight schedules are subject to change, so always check and re-check before you book.

What is the best time of year to surf in Simeulue?

April to October is considered the peak season in Simeulue. The weather is often better and the swell is more consistent. But there is still lots of good surfing in the low season.

As in so many places, weather in Simeulue is changing, and no longer follows traditional seasons. Many friends say the “peak” surfing season is changing too. So any time is a good time to visit.

What can I expect as a first time visitor to Simeulue?

Simeulue is a remote and undeveloped part of Indonesia. This is what makes it both beautiful, and a challenge! Making the trek to Simeulue does take some planning, patience and a budget. But once you arrive, you are rewarded with totally unspoiled beaches and uncrowded waves.

Simeulue is not a party island. Alcohol is not allowed on the island and the mostly Muslim population are conservative. Visitors to the island are asked to dress and behave respectfully. Your accommodation provider will advise you on dress codes.

We encourage all visitors to experience the island away from your resort. Check out the coffee shops in Sinabang, take a trip out to Mincau island or meet the fishermen pulling in their nets at Lasikin. We offer Island Experiences, or short trips, for visitors who want to see the real Simeulue with an English-speaking guide.

What can I see besides the surf?

There are opportunities to go fishing, snorkling, diving and birdwatching in Simeulue. Check out our Island Experiences for more information.
